PASS THE OATCAKES, PREGNANCY ROUND 2.

I’m very excited and grateful to be having another baby – another little one to nurture and look after. This time around I’ll know what to expect when we bring the baby home from the hospital, both the good and the bad. Anyway, I will worry about the latter in about 4 months time.
At the moment I’m dealing with being pregnant again, which for the first 12 weeks I just ignored, really. Instead I focused on trying to hide my growing bump, which was relatively easy as no one would actually think to ask outright about any weight gain. Lying was the simplest way forward – well, that and baggy clothes.

After my husband retrieved my maternity clothes from the loft, one thought occurred to me; mainly, what I was thinking when I purchased some of these items? A lot of them ended up in the loft again, to be pulled back down in desperation at a later date. I have been lucky enough to still be able to wear most of my normal, non-pregnancy clothes. I’ve found that maternity clothes make me look huge, but my normal clothes don’t. So, until I have to, I’m sticking to stretching my old clothes out of shape and using those bump panels.
The biggest shocker so far has been the morning sickness. I haven’t actually been sick. Still, I had felt as if I had been out all night, taking sip after sip of dark rum and cheap red wine, pretty much on a regular basis. It got to the point that all I wanted to do was sleep, so that I wouldn’t feel it. However, there were a few things that made it slightly better. Sleeping worked, but it was a bit of a mission with toddler and no part of life slowing down. Eating avocados, bran flakes (particularly good for the iron levels) and oatcakes also helped. In fact, I ate a lot of oatcakes. They seemed to work miraculously at taking the sick feeling away; so much so that I would even wake up in the middle of the night and have a little munch. Drinking ginger smoothies and juices seemed to work, too. Apart from these things I just had to ride it out. Thankfully, it went away around 16 weeks.
Generally, snacking instead of consuming big meals is doing the trick quite well for me. With my first pregnancy, as soon as I found out I was expecting it was like a green light to eat everything in sight. Obviously, I was under the assumption that all of the excess weight would come off after giving birth. This did not happen. This time I’m still eating a lot, but more of the right things. I’m thinking healthy, not just rubbish food.
I suffered from back problems after my first pregnancy. The thought of having 2 children makes me believe that I will have little to no rest, so I need to be as fit as possible. During this pregnancy, I have kept up going to the gym, I’m not jumping around like I’m used to doing, but doing just enough physical activity to keep myself feeling good.
Pregnancy anger isn’t anything new. It happened during my first and it tends to hit right around the 18 week mark. I tend become very angry with all sorts of little things that I would normally brush aside. Having decided I was being a tad over dramatic the last time, I have been going out of my way to avoid any and all annoying situations. I think I’ve done quite well so far, but my husband might not agree.
I’m sure many would agree, pregnancy isn’t always glamorous. This time, my hormones are raging and causing spots, I’ve never had spots this bad. Luckily, I have a friend who throws Neal’s Yard parties. I recently had a party and have been really pleased by all of their products. My friend got me into using a facial wash instead of cleansing wipes. I used to think it was too expensive to have an entire cleansing regimen and too much hassle. But, actually, I started by washing my face in the shower in the morning and then again at night whilst giving Joe a bath (although, at the moment I’m not doing it at night, because of the hormone levels). Cost-wise I think it’s actually cheaper than facial wipes, as a bottle is £16 and lasts a lot longer.

I’m currently using the Neal’s Yard rose facial wash, followed by a swipe of the Neal’s Yard purifying palmarosa toner on a warm wet cotton pad and a slathering of Olay facial lotion. I finish off my routine with rose beauty balm around the eyes. I have found that doing this once a day is perfect combination for my skin. So pregnancy round 2 is going ok, for now, as I’m now easing into the good part of the 2nd trimester. Despite the negative bits, I’m just trying to enjoy every minute whilst it lasts, because I know what is coming around the corner – the good and the bad.

    Congratulations on your pregnancy! I had HG so was really sick with mine – never actually tried oat cakes, maybe I should have. I did find eating small amounts regularly was the way to go though. #twinklytuesday
